Healthcorps:Changes Students’ lives one by one

Posted on: February 26, 2010

I wanted to share this post with you because an early education on Obesity is very important. Excessive time spent watching television, using the computer, and playing video games is partly to blame for this escalating rate. Children, on average, spend up to five to six hours a day involved in these sedentary activities. Perhaps it wouldn’t matter if they were sufficiently active at other times, but most of them aren’t.

HealthCorps®, a proactive health movement founded by heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, is fighting the obesity and mental resilience crisis by getting American students and communities across the country to take charge of their health.

HealthCorps® shows students the close relationship between physical health and mental health. HealthCorps enables teens to make healthy choices to bolster mental well-being.

The nutrition workshops show students practical ways to choose foods that are healthy, how to make simple changes in their eating behaviors and develop a healthy relationship with food that will last a lifetime.

Nutrition:

Students learn to:

  • Eat foods from all five food groups
  • Understand the health benefits and the health detriments of fat
  • Think of portion sizes
  • Eat breakfast to lose weight, gain energy, and do better in school
  • Know that the food they eat affects how they look and feel
  • Learn how to lose or gain weight responsibly
  • Choose healthy foods in restaurants
  • Avoid steroids and dubious supplements
  • Cook from scratch

Fitness:

Students learn to:

  • Exercise on a regular basis
  • Stay fit without gym equipment
  • Develop a weekly workout plan
  • Find creative and alternative ways to stay fit

HealthCorps is helping children and their families through its in-school and community programs. There is no cost to the children or school. The program cost approximately $75,000 per school. Over half of this amount pays for a Coordinators salary, benefits and educational stipend. HealthCorps relies on funding from local school districts, local governments, like-minded institutions, corporations, and individuals.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if  people all around the world would raise this awareness and educate children like Dr. Mehmet Oz?    Wouldn’t you like to make that happen? To see it integrated in every school is a dream come true…
