What’s Best for Kids: Bottled Water or Fountains?

Posted on: March 6, 2010

So what do you think? Would you let your child drink from water fountains at school or would you send water bottles instead? Would love to hear your comments…

definitely water bottles don’t want my kids to drink out of tap water it might be contaminated…

You’re right it might be contaminated and some kids might touch it with their mouths and spread bacteria…

Like the answer to “paper or plastic?” at the grocery store: NEITHER! Bottled water is a huge waste of resources. Send your children to school with a reusable bottle and you will save money, reduce waste, and reduce the spread of germs. For refills at school, water fountains are fine if the custodians and students keep them clean. If there is concern about tap water quality, it is more economical to install bottle-less water coolers than to provide bottled water. By the way, bottled water is not necessarily any “cleaner” than tap – it is less well regulated and there are no labelling requirements so you don’t really know what you are getting!
