Volunteers in Dubai Build Furniture for Orphans and kids with Special Needs

Posted on: May 4, 2010

As I was browsing through my facebook, some photos of a friend of mine got my attention. I was impressed to see pictures of him and many volunteers in Dubai helping out in building furniture for orphans and kids with special needs.

Lola Lopez the founder of Volunteers in Dubai  informs the people in Dubai that she is working with a residential care home for abandoned and orphaned children with special needs.

Currently, they live in a cramped villa in Jumeirah, but, thanks to Sheikh Mohammed, a new centre has been built for them and its ready for them to move in. This new centre will accommodate up to 100 residential children and assist a further 100 children in their day care facility.

The only thing stopping them moving in, is the lack of furniture. The centre had been offered free furniture by a Dubai based furniture company last year, but with the financial crisis, the offer was withdrawn and the centre came to her for help just before Christmas.
Instead of holding a fundraiser, she thought it would be more fun and more financially transparent, to offer donors to purchase their own items from the “wish list” and then in approximately 5 weeks time, they will all get together and assemble the furniture at the new centre. And they did!

These are some of the pictures that i chose to show you have a look:

Lola Lopez says: I have no words to describe what happened this weekend. At short notice 192 volunteers came and spent over 2,000 hours, (some volunteers working almost 30hours over the 2 days each), in order to get a residential care home for children with special needs ready for their arrival. With no AC, water or electricity, barely any breaks, these guys worked their butts off without complaint for hours and hours and hours. I really just have no words. “Thank you” doesnt quite cut it.
